TAMPA BAY'S LAY OF THE LAND
The Tampa Bay region is located on the Gulf of Mexico in West Central Florida. It is dominated by the counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco with their best known cities being Tampa, Brandon, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater Land O Lakes, Wesley Chapel and Tarpon Springs.
Hillsborough County is huge and sprawling with 1,048 square miles of land and 24 square miles of inland water area. It hosts the towns of Tampa, Odessa, Oldsmar, Carrollwood, Brandon, Valrico, Riverview, Ruskin and Sun City Center. It also hosts the nation's tenth largest port, Port Tampa's worldwide reputation is steadily built by an aggressive Tampa Bay International Trade Council. The port has undergone a 50 million dollar expansion campaign and is called Channel Side where urban revitalization is ongoing with expansion happening in the luxury condo market, retail, restaurants and more. Several cruise lines travel to ports of call including New Orleans, Cozumel Caribbean and other ports of call. Pinellas County is separated from Hillsborough County by the water of Tampa Bay and Pasco County forms a neat cap to the north of Pinellas and Hillsborough. Pinellas is the smallest county with 309 square miles of land and water and Pasco is nearly three times that size with 772 square miles. Pinellas County has the deep water port of St. Petersburg and another city experiencing urban revitalization and a very active downtown area surrounded by a large yachting and sailing marina Pinellas County hosts all the beach towns like Clearwater, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island as well as downtown beautiful St. Petersburg. Because of the many years of tourism, Pinellas County even though 1/2 the size of Hillsborough county contains the same population. Real estate costs also reflect a higher median price for the luxury of living closer to the beaches and inter-coastal waterways.
All three counties share a veritable treasure of natural beauty and economic productivity, the gulf of Mexico. The gulf is more than a soothing and intriguing companion to sun worshippers, campers and explorers. The gulf also supports thousands of workers in the commercial fishing, tourism, boating and shipping industries throughout these counties.
SNAPSHOT POPULATION
Tampa and St. Petersburg have become among Florida's most popular cities. Hillsborough has about 1.1 million people. Pinellas County - undaunted by small land size - has as many. Less populous Pasco County has 500,000 people.
Definitely a vacation paradise, ten million tourist journey to the Gulf Coast each year. Retirees, of course, love Florida for its year-round mild temperatures, the, variety of recreation and healthy living. Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco also attract a different population segment; young couples, families and business professionals of all ages. The median age in Hillsborough County is 41. In Pinellas, it increases to 49 and Pasco's average resident age is 51 years. Those figures equate to an average of around 47 for the tri-county region. Come explore beautiful Tampa Bay!
